Small on purpose.

You get the practitioner. Not an account manager, a delivery team, and a framework that was written before anyone had seen your sites.

Purlin Safety Systems Ltd. is a British Columbia practice. The name is deliberately arbitrary — a purlin means nothing in health and safety, which is exactly what makes it ownable. It also happens to describe the job: a purlin carries the load across the span and distributes it into the structure, sitting between the building and the people working under it.

The firm exists because Human and Organizational Performance has largely stayed in the hands of organisations big enough to run their own programme. Everyone else got the conference talk and a slide deck. The translation work — turning the principles into procedures, forms, supervisory habits and reporting that a contractor with four crews can actually run — is what Purlin does.

Based in British Columbia

Close enough to be on your site this week, which is the only way any of this works. Most of our clients run crews across several projects for different owners at once.

Who you'll be working with

Nathan Fergusson, Principal Consultant.

Nathan leads every engagement personally, from the first site walk through to the handover. That is not a positioning claim about attentive service — it is the operating constraint that makes the work possible. A system rewritten by someone who has not watched the crew perform the job is a system written from documents, which is how the problem started.

Background and credentials to be added.

  • Every engagement led by the practitioner who scoped it
  • Site-first: nothing is rewritten before the work has been watched
  • Built to hand off, with a defined end rather than a retainer

Where we sit

You have three other options. Here's the honest comparison.

Against the big consultancies

They sell frameworks. We sell systems that survive contact with a Tuesday morning crew change. A framework is a description of what a good system contains; it is not a system, and the gap between the two is the entire job.

Against the solo safety consultant

He brings a binder. We take the SMS you already have, strip out what's clinical and theoretical, run it live in Wombat with multi-site visibility, and leave a programme that keeps working after we go.

Against the software vendors

Platforms don't change behaviour on their own. We're the practitioner who makes the technology land with front-line supervision — which is the part the licence doesn't cover.

How we work

Four commitments you can hold us to.

We admit the hard parts

If a programme takes six months and annoys people in month two, we say so before you sign. Credibility comes from accurate expectations, not enthusiasm.

We never blame the worker

Language positioning people as the hazard contradicts everything we sell. Systems fail; people cope. If we write something that breaks that rule, tell us.

We're specific rather than impressive

"Your crews run four sites for three owners" beats "complex multi-stakeholder operational environments." If we can't say it plainly, we don't understand it yet.

We're built to leave

The engagement ends with your team owning the system. A consultant you can't get rid of is not a partner — it's a dependency you're paying for.

Start with a conversation.

Tell us what you've got and what isn't working. You'll get a straight read, including if the answer is that you don't need us.
